Any way you look at it, this was a big design task. Taking a substantial amount of content and turning it into a readable and interesting design document takes unique skills and application.
The report was built out of an extensive survey among young people in Queensland. A strong understanding of the content and topics was critical to ensuring our design framed the information in the most correct and most compelling way.
Due to the size of the project and a tight timeframe, multiple graphic artists worked concurrently, meaning collaboration between the team members was very important to maintaining clear consistency across the whole designed report.
Strategically, we adopted the “eat the elephant” approach.
By breaking the huge slab of content into bite-sized pieces, we concentrated on manageable amounts of information and solved design challenges in a more progressive and organised manner.
Our design strategy also called for liberal use of infographics to help highlight key findings. These visual icons allowed information to be showcased in a quick snapshot, adding to interest levels and readability.
Our talented graphic artist team had to utilise a variety of their creative skills across this project.
Due to the amount of content involved in a 250+ page report, we decided to colour-code each section to provide the equivalent of an internal visual index. The development of a strong colour palette formed an important part of the early creative process.
Breaking up the content with visuals was a key goal, with extensive use of photography and graphics. Some of the created graphics reflected Indigenous art, reflecting the broad cross-section of Queensland’s population and culture.
The report was delivered in both printed and web-ready formats, with the client team delighted with the timeliness and high quality of the project production. The nature of the report content ensures the impact of this communication material will be felt for years to come.
